Information on Trial: A celebration of International World Press Freedom Day
On May 3, Amnesty International USA Group 9/280 in sponsorship with UNESCO, Global and Joint Studies at NYU School of Journalism, Reporters Without Borders, The Committee to Protect Journalists, The Overseas Press Club, and the NYU Center for Religion and Media presented a day long symposium about press freedom and the persecution of journalists worldwide.
Participants and the audience stand for a moment of silence in memory of journalists who have been detained or murdered with impunity in order to silence them.
In 2012 Turkey imprisoned more journalists than any other country; Russia enacted a law to stifle dissent and has done little to end the murder with impunity of journalists; in Brazil violent attacks on the press, including the murder with impunity of journalists has increased; in the Middle East the murder and imprisonment of journalists continues. In the United States journalists covering various protests, including Occupy Wall Street have been jailed or detained and the laws designed to protect sources and privacy, and digital security have proved inadequate. All of these issues were discussed by the panelists. Images from the symposium are pictured below.
