ThePresby Iris Gardens in Montclair New Jersey were established in 1927 to honor Frank Presby, a noted horticulturalist and a founding member of the American Iris Society. The collection includes approximately 10,000 individual plants, representing 6 species and over 3,000 different named varieties of irises. It is the largest non-commercial garden dedicated to irises in the world. Here are a few blooms from this years plants
The Presby Iris Gardens in Upper Montclair, New Jersey is one of the largest iris gardens in the world with over 14,000 irises of approximately 3,000 varieties that produce more than 100,000 blooms over the course of the season. The garden beds located on an arching slope are often referred to as the “rainbow on the hill”. The garden is in full bloom this week and I was lucky enough to visit it on a sunny day in peak season.
Irises are among the most fascinating blooms. Walking among the flower beds it seemed that the plants were of infinite texture and shape with each bloom having its own individual and unique design. This is only the second year that I photographed the Presby, and I can only wonder what took me so long to discover this treasure located only about 5 miles from my home.
