Atop the cliffs two stream s converge,
One meandering on the forest floor,
The other rushing along,
Singing to the trees and creatures of the forest.
The two joining near the cliff’s edge,
Rushing over the precipice,
Rushing to join the thirsty river hundreds of feet below,
The wide Hudson, flowing peacefully to the sea.
Hurricane Irene, or tropical storm Irene by the time it reached New Jersey, caused rivers to rise to record heights above flood stage and caused major damage. The Passaic River which feeds the Great Falls in the center of Paterson NJ crested at almost 14 feet above flood stage.
Historically the Great Falls provided power for the silk mills of Paterson and the locomotive works located nearby.
These photos were taken two days after the river crested.
