Peacemakers Retreat

I was invited to photograph the fourth Peacemaker in Action Working Retreat, hosted by the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding  at Drew University in Madison New Jersey in August 2011. I met and photographed Peacemakers from all over the world who are devoting their lives and careers to promoting peace and understanding in the lands in which they live and work.

During the retreat I observed the  Peacemakers make connections with one another,  learn new peacebuilding techniques from each other, and grow in fellowship.  For more information about the participants and their work I urge you to visit the Tanenbaum Center website at http://www.tanenbaum.org.

The Peacemakers are from all points of the globe and many different faiths and beliefs:

Nozizwe Modlal-Routledge, South African, Zulu and Quaker

Najeeba Sirhan, Israel/Palestine, Muslim

Rev. James Wuye, Nigeria, Evangelical Christian

Yehezkel Landau, Israel/Palestine, Jewish

Ricardo Esquivqa Ballestas, Colombia, Mennonite

Rev. William Lowrey Sudan

Jose "Chencho" Alas, El Salvador, Roman Catholic

Ephraim Isaac, Ethiopia, Yemenite Jew

Rev. Benny Gaiy, Papua New Guinea

Friar Ivo Markovic, Bosnia Herzogovinia, Franciscan priest

Jamila Afghani, Afghanistan, Muslim

Shivi Froman, Israel, Jewish

The Peacemakers worked hard all week  discussing issues and conferring with each other. At the end they issued  a Statement of Principle which can be found at https://www.tanenbaum.org/blog/08/11/new-cooperative-international-network-working-transform-conflicts-and-build-more-peaceful.  Even with their busy schedules the Peacemakers found time to relax and enjoy each others’ company
